FAQs

What is McTimoney Chiropractic Technique?

It is a particularly gentle and effective whole body manipulation technique which aims to correct the alignment of the spine and other joints of the body, to remove the causes of pain and discomfort and to improve movement.

Causes of Misalignment

Bones can be moved fractionally out of place by falls, sports, lifting, accidents, childbirth, poor posture and various other causes.

Does it Hurt?

Most people are amazed at how gentle the technique is and find it very relaxing. Many people choose to have regular treatments to improve their mobility and reduce their pain.

Additional Techniques and Machines

In some cases massage may be appropriate as well as the chiropractic and this may be done by hand, or with the use of machines. Specialist instruments may sometimes be used to adjust vertebrae, or for pain relief. I may also use some other therapeutic techniques if they are appropriate to your condition.

Do I Have to Undress?

It is best to change down to your underwear – a modesty gown is provided. A chaperone is always welcomed.

Can anyone be a Chiropractor?

No. It is illegal for anyone to use the title chiropractor unless they are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), which is the regulatory body for chiropractic in the UK. The GCC set and monitor standards in the industry and undertake checks om registered chiropractors.

What to Expect from your First Treatment

A full case history is taken, including your general health background as well as details of your symptoms. This is to fully analyse your problem, to understand your overall health and to make sure that chiropractic care is appropriate and safe for you. You will then be given an explanation about chiropractic and what to expect.
Your treatment consists of an examination of all the joints of your body, literally from head to toe, with adjustments being made where necessary and appropriate neurological and orthopaedic tests being carried out. We use a variety of light, swift and dextrous techniques, unique to McTimoney Chiropractic, to adjust the bones and muscles.

How many Sessions will I need?

This varies enormously depending on what the problem is and how long you have had it. Positive changes are normally noticed after 2-6 treatments, although you may need more for best effect and to help you prevent a recurrence.

We may also give advice on self-help, posture, lifestyle and exercises to aid your recovery.

Ongoing Chiropractic Care

After a successful course of treatments, it often pays to have regular treatment. The interval between maintenance treatments depends on what suits your body. Regular chiropractic treatment may prevent future problems or help keep you more mobile.
